چکیده

The local thermodynamics of a system with long-range interactions in d dimensions is studied using the mean-field approximation. Long-range interactions are introduced through pair interaction potentials that decay as a power law in the interparticle distance. We compute the local entropy, Helmholtz free energy, and grand potential per particle in the microcanonical, canonical, and grand canonical ensembles, respectively. From the local entropy per particle we obtain the local equation of state of the system by using the condition of local thermodynamic equilibrium. This local equation of state has the form of the ideal gas equation of state, but with the density depending on the potential characterizing long-range interactions. By volume integration of the relation between the different thermodynamic potentials at the local level, we find the corresponding equation satisfied by the potentials at the global level. It is shown that the potential energy enters as a thermodynamic variable that modifies the global thermodynamic potentials. As a result, we find a generalized Gibbs-Duhem equation that relates the potential energy to the temperature, pressure, and chemical potential. For the marginal case where the power of the decaying interaction potential is equal to the dimension of the space, the usual Gibbs-Duhem equation is recovered. As examples of the application of this equation, we consider spatially uniform interaction potentials and the self-gravitating gas. We also point out a close relationship with the thermodynamics of small systems.

Modeling the Thermodynamic Properties of Solutions Containing Polymer and Electrolyte with New Local Composition Model

A new theory model based on the local composition concept (TNRF-modified NRTL (TNRF-mNRTL) model) was developed to express the short-range contribution of the excess Gibbs energy for the solutions containing polymer and electrolyte. An equation represented the activity coefficient of solvent was derived from the proposed excess Gibbs energy equation. The short-range contribution of interaction ...

The universal characteristics of a thermodynamic model to conform to the Gibbs-Duhem equation

In a multi-component homogeneous system, the relationship between partial molar and molar quantity (RPMQ) is proved to be an equivalent relation of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. The universal characteristics of a thermodynamic model to conform to the Gibbs-Duhem equation are inferred from the RPMQ. Based on the inference, an asymmetric regular solution model is suggested to deal with those systems ...

Towards a Fundamental Structure of Continuum Mechanics

For a class of systems obeying Euler's equation of motion the existence of a quantity to be named "proper mechanical energy" (PME) is shown which, together with internal energy, results in a quantity to be named "proper energy" (PE), which is conserved under conditions of time-dependent potentials. The appertaining formal structure for the continuum mechanics of such systems is the counterpart ...

Hamiltonian and Brownian systems with long-range interactions

We discuss the dynamics and thermodynamics of systems with long-range interactions. We contrast the microcanonical description of an isolated Hamiltonian system to the canonical description of a stochastically forced Brownian system. We show that the mean-field approximation is exact in a proper thermodynamic limit. The equilibrium distribution function is solution of an integrodifferential equ...

Thermodynamics for single-molecule stretching experiments.

We show how to construct nonequilibrium thermodynamics for systems too small to be considered thermodynamically in a traditional sense.
